Elected Officials Panel: Preparing Texas for High Speed Rail

We are excited to announce the topic of the elected officials panel on Friday afternoon will be “Preparing Texas for High Speed Rail.” We are waiting on several confirmations for officials from San Antonio, Austin, and in between, but are very pleased that Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Texas Representative Carol Alvarado, Fort Worth City Councilmember Jungus Jordan, College Station Mayor Ben White, and Travis County Commissioner Sarah Eckhardt will participate in this panel.

NeumanDr. Michael Neuman, Associate Professor of Urban Planning at Texas A&M Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, will speak at the Megaregions + MetroProsperity conference in September. Neuman and his Texas A&M students’ work in a variety of urban planning and sustainable design fields have won various distinctions throughout his career. In addition, Neuman founded the Michael Neuman Consultancy, which advises in the various aspects and categories of planning. As the Chair of the Sustinable Urbanism Program at Texas A&M and a speaker at the Megaregions + MetroProsperity conference, Neuman will address the research Texas A&M has done on creating a framework for future growth in the Texas Urban Triangle.

Mark Anielski

mark_anielskiMark Anielski is an ecological economist and President and CEO of Anielski Management Inc. (AMI), a consulting firm specializing in the measurement of community well-being and sustainability. AMI provides communities, businesses, and governments with sustainable economic assessments of different scenarios and situations. In his work, Anielski has advised the Chinese government on how to develop and adopt a “green GDP accounting” system as a means of measuring sustainable development in China. In addition to his consulting practice, Anielski teaches Sustainable Economics at the new Bainbridge Graduate Institute (Washington), the first sustainability MBA program in US.

At the Megaregions + MetroProsperity conference, Anielski will address the economic situation of the Texas Triangle megaregion and assess the most sustainable and economically sound options for the megaregion. This economic assessment will be crucial in the following conference discussions, as finding a sustainable path to wealth for the region is one of the top concerns of the conference.

Petra Todorovich

todorovichAs the Director of America 2050, a Regional Plan Association initiative and co-host of the Megaregions + MetroProsperity conference, Petra Todorovich has addressed the infrastructure and growth issues of the eleven American megaregions and will end the megaregions tour with the Texas Triangle megaregion. Along with several other America 2050 representatives, Todorovich will introduce the America 2050 national initiatives and hopes for the results of the conference.

Robert Yaro

yaroRegional Plan Association President Robert Yaro will be a speaker and panel moderator at the Megaregions + MetroProsperity conference. Through RPA, a Manhattan-based agency, Yaro has worked with many New York urban planning and sustainability initiatives in order to improve quality of life. RPA has also worked to encourage research and education initiatives, including the America 2050 initiative that is co-hosting the conference. Yaro, in company with several other America 2050 representatives, will introduce America 2050’s Megaregions initiative and address its critical importance to the future success of the Texas Megaregion.

David Crossley

david_crossleyDavid Crossley, President and founder of conference co-host Houston Tomorrow, has helped Houston Tomorrow, formerly the Gulf Coast Institute, lead the Smart Growth Initiative in the Houston region since 1998. Crossley serves on the board of Smart Growth America, the steering committee of America 2050, and is associate director of the Houston Chapter of the American Planning Association. Crossley will welcome Megaregions + MetroProsperity attendees at the beginning of each day of the conference, introducing the goals of the conference and the other speakers scheduled for the day. Additionally, Crossley will speak about the process and necessity of creating a sustainable region over the conference’s Friday lunch hour.

Robert Lang

robertlangDr. Robert Lang is Co-Director of the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech in Alexandria, Virginia, and an associate professor of urban affairs and planning in Virginia Tech’s School of Planning and International Affairs. In 2007, Lang was named a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, he was director of urban and metropolitan research at the Fannie Mae Foundation. Lang’s research has been featured in USA Today, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and U.S. News & World Report, and reported on by NPR, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, and ABC News. He is the author of Edgeless Cities: Exploring the Elusive Metropolis (Brookings Institution Press, 2003) and Boomburbs: The Rise of America’s Accidental Cities (Brookings Institution Press, 2007).

Frederick Steiner

steinerAs Dean of the University of Texas School of Architecture, Frederick Steiner has had a great variety of experience and education in regional and city planning,  architecture, and environmental studies. Among the numerous civic and academic endeavors Dean Steiner has been a part of and worked with, he chairs the board of Envision Central Texas, (a Megaregions+MetroProsperity conference partner) and was responsible for the establishment of the UT School of Architecture research facility called the Center for Sustainable Development, another conference partner. Steiner will speak at the Megaregions+MetroProsperity conference, analyzing the Texas Triangle Megaregion based on the work he and others at UT have done to understand the megaregion’s issues. He is a also a member of the America 2050 steering committee.
